Members of the Home and Garden Club took a walk through history when they traveled to St. Augustine for the Christmas in the Gilded Age holiday tour of homes on December 8. The annual tour was presented by the Ancient City’s Garden Club.
The walking tour included six homes in the historic neighborhood developed by Henry Flagler in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s as winter homes to escape from the cold Northern climate. The neighborhood is surrounded by Cordova, King, Orange and Malaga streets, just north of Flagler College.
The decorated homes were filled with hundreds of flowers, garlands, wreathes and candles reminiscent of decorations in the late 19th Century. Combinations of roses, poinsettias, hydrangeas and peonies, intertwined with foliage, palm fronds and ribbons, created beautiful displays on mantles, tables and countertops. Period architecture and furniture further enhanced the historical period. Many of the homes have been remodeled with modern conveniences while still maintaining the authenticity of the era.
To cap off the experience, a tea was presented at the River House on the intercoastal waterway.
