by Brit Bennett, 2020. Historical fiction/domestic fiction/family saga.
Twin girls run away from a rural southern black town at the age of 16. Years later, one marries a dark-skinned black man and has a child; the other lives her life passing as white in California. The novel follows them across generations, as their lives branch away from each other and yet remain intertwined. Themes of belonging, identity, family and race are explored in a provocative, compassionate way.
