Home & Garden Club members and Deercreek residents are invited!
If you have palm trees on your property, this month’s topic is for you! We have an expert in palm trees, Dr. Mica McMillan, Assistant Professor, Palm Horticulture Specialist at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center. Dr. McMillan was introduced to us by one of the newer residents in Deercreek, Patricia Barker, noting that many of our palms could be trimmed more appropriately for long-term health.
Dr. McMillan has worked as a researcher in the agriculture and turf/grass industries focused on developing chemistries to improve plant and soil health. She currently focuses on growing palm and ornamental plants from seed under various environmental and soil conditions, including fertilization/uptake of nutrients, transplant stress, and basic maintenance and upkeep.
One of the easiest ways to improve plant health is to prune correctly. Dr. McMillan will address hurricane pruning and why this can potentially cause decline and even death in palms.
